Frizzy Fridays: How We Create Clothing for Frizzy Characters

Welcome Back to another blog entry! We're coming closer to our personal 1 year anniversary of Frizzy Characters - the 19th of November. Keep this date in mind..!

Three hand-drawn Frizzy Characters clothing options for the elite jacket

Today, Frizzy will show you step by step how a piece of clothing is created using Procreate.

🗣️ FRIZZY: Hi guys! As Frizzy Characters is a huge deal for SSO clubs, I am currently adding a lot of clothing that is inspired by ingame items. So far, I added a sleek turtleneck and knitted pullover as well as a classic blazer with lots and lots of overlays. The top I‘ve chosen for this blog entry was voted for on a poll on Instagram about two weeks ago and is definitely one of the prettiest items that exist in StarStable right now.

STEP 1 — CHOOSING A REFERENCE

wether it may be a piece of some game or a fantasy dress: I almost always choose a reference to get the lighting and fabric folds right.

STEP 2 — BASE AND OVERLAYS

To get as many unique variations out of just one piece of clothing, I seperate details like metal decoration or textures from the base. This process is a bit tricky because I have to make sure that every overlay has no parts with lower opacity which would lead to color bleeding or small gaps between clothing parts. Also, I have to decide what the base should look like. Which parts are completely seperate add-ons and which parts belong directly to the base item (like the jacket itself for example). This step is absolutely fundamental for everything that happens after.

STEP 3 — GRAYSCALE SHADING

Next is shading. Here I have to keep in mind that the "original" shaded version should work for all colors I want later. I can‘t use color already because then I might get problems as soon as I want to turn a dark red into a baby blue for example. But also I can‘t go for black because there wouldn‘t be enough color variation in the shadow areas and adjusting the item to bright colors like white would look very unfinished. So the first color for any clothing item is always a nice grey with well distributed values. (At this point I don‘t know why I didn‘t use this technique for hair as well, probably didn’t wanna work without colors all the time😭)

STEP 4 — COLORS

Now that I have a nice and 3D looking original, I start playing around with hue, saturation and brightness settings as well as curves and gradient maps. While hairstyles all have the exact same color palette, clothes and hats have whatever colors I come up with. I usually try to design every possible outfit combination any club might have as well as add pretty overlays exclusive to owners.
